Maker education is a constructionist approach to learning that focuses on hands-on learning. Formal education with a particular focus on maker culture has been shown to motivate students to work in a practical context. Maker activities are usually carried out in makerspaces, which are learning environments designed to give individuals the opportunity to collaborate, work on projects and share knowledge. Participants in these spaces have the opportunity to use a wide range of digital and conventional tools and devices to create artefacts. This chapter reviews current theory and research on maker education and makerspaces in formal education, exploring the opportunities and challenges that maker education presents. Furthermore, it presents and discusses practical strategies for integrating maker education into Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) teaching and learning through makerspaces. Recent literature indicates a growing interest in maker-oriented teacher training in the formal education sector due to the possibilities it offers in the field of twenty-first century education. However, gaps remain that must be addressed to implement this emerging educational approach effectively and enrich educational processes. In conclusion, this chapter outlines several ideas for incorporating maker education into formal education and ways forward.
