Jua Kali Entrepreneurs and Their Networks: Empirical Insights
摘要
This chapter explores the influence of social networks on the performance of Jua Kali small, medium, and micro enterprises in Nairobi City County, Kenya, focusing on network size, diversity, strength, and structure. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study presented in this chapter integrates qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions with quantitative survey data from artisans across multiple sub-counties. Qualitative findings reveal that artisans form small, trust-based networks, where ethnic and skill diversity fosters collaboration but can limit expansion due to insularity. Quantitative results show that larger, diverse networks enhance customer reach and resource sharing, though trust issues temper network strength. Younger and male artisans tend to leverage broader networks, improving market access. The chapter underscores social capital’s role in bolstering resilience and sustainability in Kenya’s informal economy, revealing challenges like network insularity and trust limitations.
