Supporting Recovery: Trauma-Informed Strategies for Early Childhood in Times of Disaster
摘要
This chapter offers a comprehensive approach for supporting the developmental needs of young children impacted by disasters through developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed practice (TIP). Drawing from real-world examples, it details the psychological and developmental effects of trauma, cognitive disruptions, emotional regulation difficulties, and social relationship challenges. The chapter also examines trauma responses in early childhood, exploring how trauma can fundamentally reorganize the mind and body. TIP strategies are introduced in tandem with core DAP principles, emphasizing how educators and caregivers can establish safety, promote emotional and cognitive regulation, and foster resilience through mindfulness, play-based learning, positive language, and sensory grounding techniques. Tailored recommendations for recovery address the needs resulting from both violence-related trauma and natural disasters, including restoring stability and connecting families to community resources.
