This chapter serves as the introduction to the “Educating young children caught in disasters: Multidisciplinary perspectives and interventions” publication. It starts out with some background information about how the editor developed the knowledge, skills, and experiences to prepare this volume. Then, information is shared regarding the organization of the volume and how the remaining 16 individual chapters are assigned to one of the four main parts. More specifically, Part I (Chapters 2-7) addresses humanitarian crises and disasters and their implications on the education and social-emotional development of young children while Part II (Chapters 8-11) focuses on environmental disasters and their implications on the education and social-emotional development of young children. Part III (Chapters 12-16) addresses developmentally appropriate strategies to help children with trauma in the aftermath of the disasters. Lastly, Part IV (Chapter 17) provides key lessons and implications based on each of the chapters. This chapter also indicates the similarities among all 15 main chapters and shares how all chapters are grouped into common key situations that they address (e.g., child protection crisis, disrupted schooling, and disruption of the environment in which the children grow up and develop). Further, this chapter shares information about the limitations of this volume as they relate to the types of disasters, geographical locations, and the age-group of children addressed in this volume. Finally, this chapter highlights the three main goals of this volume.
