Since the 1990s, two innovative research programs have advocated for broadening and deepening the study of regionalism, recognising it as a truly multidimensional, large-scale, and long-term historical phenomenon. These are the well-known New Regionalism Approach (NRA) by Björn Hettne and Fredrik Söderbaum, on the one hand, and the Regional Worlds (RW) project by Amitav Acharya, on the other, the latter now converged into the research program on Global IR and the multiplex world order.
