Sustainable Seas: The Role of SDG-14 in Shaping the Blue Economy and Marine Ecosystem Health
摘要
The term blue economy originally surfaced in 2010 and means harnessing ocean resources in a way that is healthy for the economy, jobs, the environment, and people’s lives. But a blue economy that lasts has to cope with issues like climate change, ocean acidification, and a lack of information about the ocean. “For instance, 95% of the ocean is yet unexplored, therefore it’s even more important to understand the blue economy and put it into action throughout the world. Some of the other difficulties are harmful algal blooms (HABs), invasive species, coral bleaching, and thermohaline circulation”. This overview covers a lot of different components of the blue economy, such food, value-added items, offshore energy, oxygen sources, mining, fishing, carbon sequestration, and cloud seeding. This chapter also discusses about the future of the blue economy, such as how to make it more sustainable, how to develop rules that work, and how to use less carbon and microplastics.
