This chapter discusses the problem of modality in a broad sense. It presents motivations for introducing possible worlds, ranging from clarifying modal claims to explaining various metaphysical phenomena. However, possible worlds are not the only framework, and various alternatives are considered. Given the interplay between metaphysics and epistemology, the chapter also outlines several ways of understanding the relationship. It concludes with a discussion of agnosticism and scepticism in relation to modality.
