Development and Processing of Thermoplastic Matrix Reinforced with Continuous Banana Fiber via Fused Filament Fabrication

Banana crops generate a considerable number ofFused filament fabrication lignocellulose-rich residues. One strategy for managing these residues is to use additive manufacturingAdditive Manufacturing (AM) technologies, which can increase their aggregate value. In this study, a fused filament fabricationFused filament fabrication (FFF) printer was modified for 3D printing3D printing continuous banana fiber yarns (CBFY) in a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix. For this purpose, a new 3D print head with in-situ impregnation was developed to process the printed parts. The CBFY were treated with mercerization and a polymer coatingPolymer coating. The most relevant problems related to depositing the printing material made from CBFY and the PLA matrix were discussed. Additionally, tensile and flexural testing were used to evaluate the mechanical propertiesMechanical properties of the parts. The properties of the printed parts were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA).
