This chapter provides historical institutional and legislative information about the formation of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI),National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and it describes the mission of the NHLBINHLBI along with the mission of the other Institutes within the National Institutes of Health (NIH)National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is also discussed in terms of its legislative history and its specific mission and goals within the NIH and the NHLBI. Numerous graphs are included to illustrate the budget history of NIH and the NHLBI and the research award history of the SBIR program within the NIH and the NHLBI. The appendix to the chapter provides abstract summaries of representative research projects funded through the SBIR program.
