Introduced to Algeria in 1857, the railway has led to the construction of many railway lines, as well as various buildings and equipment. Its wide range of tangible and intangible heritage reflects the identity of the places in which stations and engineering structures have been built. Although today this railway heritage is struggling to be safeguarded and recognized as such, it is nonetheless a testimony to the history of architecture and the art of engineering. Faced with the perceptible risk of a loss of authenticity and integrity of this heritage, our participation, thanks to the reasoned exploitation of archival sources, the national rail transport company, the documents of the IFA archive center in France, complemented by in situ investigation, highlighted the issues of digital inventory through the creation of a digitized database of these cultural assets. This is structured on the basis of inventory sheets inspired by the “Heritage Programme” carried out as part of cooperation between Algeria and the European Union. Our paper focuses on how to create a website to inventory and promote railway architecture in Algeria, concentrating on railway stations and engineering structures in western Algeria. This digital platform aims to safeguard, raise awareness of and improve the management of this heritage, with a view to preserving it and promoting its recognition as national, and even international, heritage.

Digital Portal for Documenting and Promoting the Algerian Railway Heritage
