Romania is a European country with a rich history that reflects in its architecture. Nowadays, there are a large number of heritage buildings and structures that needs to be protected. The first level of protection is represented by the acknowledgement of their heritage status, which allows architects and specialists to be informed in real time. But the reality is that in Romania, the list of the buildings that are considered monuments or in protected areas is outdated, mainly due to the lack of specialists and volunteers. Also, the legislation and methodologies that are relevant for the restoration field are not aligned with modern practises and very often burden the specialists with the bureaucratic process. This paper aims to observe and analyse the actual state of the legislation and directives in the field of heritage preservation in Romania. This represents the first step of a larger research work, which aims to facilitate digitalisation tools and modern restoration practices, that will be easier to follow and apply. The base of every future measure to protect heritage is represented by the necessity of knowing the limitations and challenges of the present tools.
