The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into environmental governance creates a paradox wherein AI can improve our decision-making for sustainability, thereby presenting us with ethical dilemmas for which adequate responses do not yet exist. Although globally, there is pressure to move to digital sustainability, there are no frameworks for voluntary guidance on the ethical, social inclusion, and environmental justice to govern AI-generated climate action strategies. This chapter shares the ethical debates related to AI for environmental governance, with a particular focus on the tension between improvements in technological efficiency and moral obligations. The research will utilize a qualitative methodology measuring secondary data sources, policy documents, academic literature, and case studies of AI initiatives for international environmental governance. Content analysis is used to identify what ethical principles are present (or absent) in tech-enabled sustainability initiatives, map ethical risks, and compare governance strategies across geopolitical contexts. Contributions of this chapter include developing a taxonomy of ethical risks, a comparative analysis of contexts of governance strategies, and a conceptual model for insertion of ethics into future frameworks for AI climate action. This chapter aims to enhance the ability of researchers, policymakers, and technology practitioners to manage the connection of accountability and innovation to address wicked global environmental challenges.
