Groups play a crucial role in interdependent sport, affecting a range of outcomes for individuals and teams alike (Eys et al., 2020). Within this chapter, we explore how group dynamics principles can serve as a foundation for understanding a critically important concept in sport—creativity. Throughout, we adopt a broad conceptualization of creativity as the creation of novel and useful solutions to open-ended problems (Runco, 2014). Whereas defining creativity may involve specific traits (e.g., some people are more creative than others) and outcomes (e.g., some movements represent more creativity than others), our emphasis is on creativity as a process that considers the broad area of possibility for individuals and teams (Richard et al., 2024). As such, we discuss how creativity relates to key concepts within a main organizing framework for group dynamics in sport (Eys et al., 2020). Specifically, we (a) introduce the organizing framework, (b) position the concept of creativity in relation to three major sections of the framework and (c) propose future directions for applying group dynamics research to enhance our understanding of creativity. This chapter specifically aims to fill a surprising gap in the literature pertaining to research directly linking group dynamics to creativity in sport.

摘要
