Students’ Perspectives on Greek Language Education in Canada: Learning Experiences, Needs and Challenges
摘要
The study centres on the educational needs and challenges faced by heritage language learners (HLL) in Canada. Taking Greek language education as a point of reference, we initially investigate the profile of Greek language learners at various educational settings across Canada, focusing on their ethnic backgrounds and language learning motivations. Examining their educational path, we attempt to demonstrate their level of satisfaction from attending Greek language classes and to identify challenges they encounter in the classroom. Students’ perceptions, captured through open and closed questions, can provide a starting point for developing a broader reflection on the status of heritage languages in modern multilingual contexts, on the meaning of multiple identities among members of different diasporic communities and on the educational practices that are likely to strengthen intergenerational transmission and to promote heritage languages revitalization.
