Capoeira has expanded globally for at least 40 years. This introductory chapter offers an overview of the book’s main topics, showing the importance of the new reconfigurations of capoeira around the world. There is an emphasis on the novel aspects of the martial art-dance, and how it has been introduced in unexpected places like the African continent and Russia. At the same time, the Introduction explores the process of epistemological symmetry in capoeira studies and the importance of acknowledging the leaders’ voices in the process of capoeira’s global expansion. The chapter also highlights the contributions of capoeira leaders in reshaping academic debates today and their role as caretakers of Afro-Brazilian tradition.
