Edible films and coatings have gained popularity in food preservation and protection because of their many benefits compared to synthetic substances, such as being biodegradable and eco-friendly. The functional properties of these biopolymer-based materials can be enhanced by incorporating plant extracts. This chapter provides the recent advancements in the addition of plant extracts into edible films and coatings, emphasizing their impact on techno-functional properties. Moreover, the chapter explores the impact of plant extracts on the mechanical, barrier, functional, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of biopolymer-based coatings. Furthermore, the insights of the chapter illustrate how the improved coatings and films are effectively prolonging the shelf life and enhancing the food quality through detailed examples and real-world applications. This chapter also underscores the potential of plant extract–infused edible films to revolutionize food preservation by promoting sustainability and enhancing food safety.
