Enhanced Performance Gains through Technological Innovations in Business Process Management: A Systematic Literature Review

The rapid advancement of digital technologies is reshaping Business Process Management (BPM), transitioning it from traditional frameworks to agile, real-time Business Intelligence Systems (BIS). This study presents a systematic literature review of 87 peer-reviewed articles published between March 2020 and April 2025, examining the intersection of BPM, BIS, and Digital Technological Innovation (DTI). The manuscript analysis identifies key technological trends in business processes such as value co-creation, enhanced customer engagement, and the integration of human and artificial intelligence that are driving continuous reformation for operational excellence. The objective of this paper is to review and critically assess current research at the intersection of digital transformation and business model innovation (BMI). The core objective of this paper is to review and critically assess current research by integrating contemporary insights. This study bridges critical gaps in how digital technologies boost BPM efficiency and performance. The research results emphasize the vital role of emerging technologies in generating real-time business intelligence, creating dynamic value, enabling big data–driven decision-making, and composing knowledge-focused workflows. Finally, this study presents a research agenda and practical recommendations to help firms navigate ongoing digital disruption, continuously refine their process architectures, and sustain a competitive advantage in an intelligent business environment.
