What is the Ecological Value of AI Used for Environmental Purposes and to What Extent is It Ethical?
摘要
AI use for environmental purposes has increased significantly in the last years. However, the sustainability of AI is still an approach fraught with normative debate. In this chapter my aim is to contribute to rethink the relationship between AI, human values and non-human nature from environmental ethics. For this task, I will be particularly focused on discussing, first, what may be the ecological value of, or in relation to, AI, and second, whether it is ethical to use AI to enhance ecological values. Section 2 explores the plurality of meanings that the term ecological value has. Section 3 identifies and classifies the different uses of AI for environmental purposes or that may be helpful in preserving ecological value. Sections 4 and 5 discuss how the increase in human autonomy thanks to AI used for environmental purposes might be offset by the loss of non-human autonomy and other ecological values, such as resilience and integrity. Finally, being aware of the axiological plurality of AI used for environmental purposes means weighing up under what circumstances and for what ethical reasons its development and implementation might be worthwhile.
