In this chapter, I explore the role that the oral tradition plays in shaping the development of contemporary Malawian poets. Contemporary Malawian poetry reflects a process and phase that enabled writers to return to the oral tradition and incorporate storytelling techniques to enrich their work. My focus is not just on the narrative structure, but also on how the poets’ work was different from that of the first generation of African poets. Also, the paper explores the allegorical slant of the text, deployment of satire, and the dominant use of African storytelling techniques to create an African mode of communication.
