Malawian writers use knowledge acquired from national history to make their work relevant to Africa, the African diaspora, and the world. In this chapter I examine fiction/nonfiction and poetry by Paul Zeleza, Jack Mapanje, Steve Chimombo, and Lupenga Mphande, among others, to illustrate the importance of autobiographical narratives and national memory in Malawian literature. I attempt to locate in the works of these authors theme, style, motif, and narrative technique that show how their writings are influenced by oral literature and human conditions that establish the symbiotic relationship between literature and history.

摘要

Malawian writers use knowledge acquired from national history to make their work relevant to Africa, the African diaspora, and the world. In this chapter I examine fiction/nonfiction and poetry by Paul Zeleza, Jack Mapanje, Steve Chimombo, and Lupenga Mphande, among others, to illustrate the importance of autobiographical narratives and national memory in Malawian literature. I attempt to locate in the works of these authors theme, style, motif, and narrative technique that show how their writings are influenced by oral literature and human conditions that establish the symbiotic relationship between literature and history.
