Developing One’s Residency Leadership Team

Building your leadership team is one of the most important responsibilities that you undertake early in your term as program director (PD). The thoughtful selection of your teammates is critical for success in your own role and how your program develops and supports your residents. Several key groups comprise the leadership team: associate program directors (APDs) and core faculty, chief residents, and administrative coordinators. This chapter discusses a variety of factors to consider in building your team, including compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements, program needs, balancing perspectives and skill sets, and division of labor.
