The Future of Pediatric Education: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovation
摘要
Pediatricians, at their core, are educators. Whether they are guiding patients and families through the complexities of health and development or mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows, teaching is an integral part of their daily practice. Pediatric medical educators bring a distinctive passion and expertise to their roles, forming a vibrant community dedicated to a shared mission: ensuring the health and well-being of all children, fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce, nurturing personal growth, and driving educational innovation and scholarship. Despite this unwavering commitment, pediatric medical education faces significant challenges. The field is grappling with an undersupply of residency and fellowship applicants, insufficient workforce numbers to meet the needs of our patients, and financial disincentives that deter many from pursuing pediatric careers. Additionally, restrictive federal and state legislation hampers the ability to provide comprehensive education on crucial topics such as equity, diversity, inclusion, reproductive health, and gender-affirming care. The effects of climate change and the impacts of structural and institutional racism further complicate the landscape for pediatric trainees and the children they serve. However, amid these challenges, the field is ripe with opportunities to advance child health and refine the education of future pediatricians. Competency-based medical education is reshaping our approach, focusing on placing patients and families at the center of our educational goals. The rise of coaching programs offers tailored support for learners, while innovative pathway programs aim to build a more diverse workforce. Leaders in pediatric education are actively addressing systemic racism and enhancing curricula to tackle healthcare disparities, provide trauma-responsive care, and practice value-conscious medicine. Technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality are creating new learning possibilities, and innovative care models are integrating trainees into dynamic clinical environments. This chapter will explore the current challenges faced in pediatric medical education, highlight the promising opportunities that lie ahead, and delve into the exciting innovations on the horizon for pediatric educators. Through a comprehensive examination of these elements, we aim to illuminate the path forward for shaping the next generation of pediatricians and advancing the field of pediatric medicine.
