In this chapter, we discuss that the transition from Web2 to Web3 aims to overcome the inherent limitations of the current centralized, platform-driven Internet. We continue to argue that Web3 represents the next evolutionary stage of the Internet in which a decentralized, user-centric digital ecosystem is rooted in the principles of people-centricity and value co-creation. Therefore, we explore the technologies required to drive the shift to Web3, which facilitate moving beyond platform dominance toward user-controlled digital identities and assets. We discuss its core, including Blockchain Technology that enables a trustless, transparent system through distributed ledgers, consensus mechanisms (PoW, PoS, BFT), and smart contracts that automate rules without intermediaries. Complementing this is privacy-preserving computation (PPC), which protects confidentiality via homomorphic encryption, Secure Multi-Party Computation, federated learning, differential privacy, and zero-knowledge proofs. Together, blockchain’s decentralization, immutability, and security—combined with PPC’s privacy guarantees—form the foundational technological stack powering Web3’s decentralized digital future.
