In what follows, I won’t discuss what (if anything) I may have delivered as a philosopher. That is for others to judge and, indeed, the contributors have done so in their chapters. Instead, I want to share some thoughts about philosophy, an activity whose strangeness is highlighted by its being a minority pastime, notwithstanding its implicit claim to having universal significance. While it may be true that each one of us has ‘a philosophy’, or ‘a philosophy of life’, few do philosophy by making that philosophy explicit, subjecting it to their own and others’ critical examination, and endeavouring to make it coherent.

摘要
