Measuring Tallis’s Distance from Religion
摘要
Raymond Tallis is a public atheist and patron of the British Humanist Association. At first glance, he would appear to have little in common with a religious frame of mind. Nevertheless, intellectuals who are sympathetic to religion often react favourably to Tallis and his work, and he has had some surprising friendships with Christians and their fellow travellers. Conversely, some of the reviews of his work by his fellow anti-religionists manifest not just irritation but also an almost visceral anger. In this chapter, we, an Anglican Bishop and a Roman Catholic priest, investigate the motivations for these responses. We review Tallis’s work from a theological perspective to measure his distance from religion.
