This chapter outlines defensive strategies aimed at mitigating the negative effects of fake leadership in HEIs. It begins by discussing the critical role employees play in combating fake leadership through transparency, ethical conduct, and collective action. Then, this chapter presents various defensive strategies dividing them into two groups: organizational and individual ones. First, organizational strategies aiming at defense against fake leadership detrimental effects on HEIs are discussed: fostering a strong academic culture based on academic values, promotion of ethical authority figures, and transparent election procedures. Next, individual strategies aiming at defense against fake leadership detrimental effects on HEIs are discussed: refraining from activities, avoiding responsibility, building alliances, rigorously following procedures, balancing conformity, and seeking support within and outside the organization. These strategies collectively aim to protect employees and institutions and mitigate fake leadership negative influence on job performance, brand commitment, and finally—organizational destruction in HEIs.
