Chronic Pain
摘要
This chapter overviews chronic pain (CP). While CP is common in primary care (PC) settings, its treatment causes frustration for patients and providers alike. The chapter overviews CP diagnostic criteria, prevalence rates, risk factors and disparities. It outlines three symptom screeners for CP and reviews applications of the biopsychosocial model for effective CP treatment in PC, including techniques for setting and pursuing realistic pain management goals. Non-pharmacological interventions, including cognitive disputation to address catastrophizing, activity increase, and pacing are outlined. Integrative medicine interventions include biofeedback, mindfulness-based interventions, acupuncture, as well as herbs, botanicals, and supplements. A case vignette illustrates presented concepts, and the chapter provides Clinical Pearls, Frequently Asked Questions, and Resources.
