This chapter reviews diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and its prevalence, risk factors, and disparities. Chapter presents three brief screening tools: Primary Care PTSD screener (PC-PTSD-5), PTSD Checklist (PCL-5), Clinician Administered PTSD Scale for Children and Adolescents (CAPS-CA-5) and their practice-relevant characteristics. The non-pharmacological conceptualization section includes patient education about etiology and maintaining factors and focuses on management of interpersonal aspects of PTSD (distress and avoidance). Additionally, “Just World” and “Silver Lining” trauma explanations are outlined and addressed. Non-pharmacological interventions focus on symptom assessment and ongoing education to support medical care delivery. Case vignette is used to illustrate presented concepts. Integrative medicine techniques include movement-based interventions: yoga, tai-chi, qigong, and acupuncture. Chapter concludes with Clinical Pearls, Frequently Asked Questions, and Resources.
