This chapter reviews diagnostic criteria for panic disorder (PD), its prevalence, risk factors and associated disparities. Chapter presents three brief PD screening tools: Patient Health Questionnaire Panic Disorder subscale (PHQ—PD), Panic Disorder Screener (PADIS), and Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) and outlines screeners’ practice-relevant characteristics. The non-pharmacological conceptualization section includes three key “messages” which physicians need to articulate to effectively educate about PD etiology and maintaining factors. Additionally, chapter outlines information to normalize and educate about PD and assist with building coping skills of diaphragmatic breathing and emotional acceptance techniques which synergistically improve avoidance behaviors. Integrative medicine interventions include mind-body techniques, lifestyle medicine, review of possible role of nutritional deficiencies and inositol. Case vignette is used to illustrate presented concepts. Chapter concludes with Clinical Pearls, Frequently Asked Questions, and Resources.
