This chapter aims to enhance PC physicians’ understanding of evidence-based psychotherapy (EBP) care. The chapter briefly presents evidence supporting links between mental and physical health conditions and importance of psychotherapeutic interventions for medical illness management. Additionally, this chapter outlines key characteristics of EBPs and their fundamental processes. Red flags for ineffective or otherwise problematic psychotherapy are presented and discussed. Finally, practical ways of promoting and supporting a patient’s psychotherapy engagement are outlined.
