Tierschutz-erLeben – Animal Welfare Experience is an educational platform that introduces a gamified, story-driven approach to learning, specifically designed for agriculture students. Traditional teaching strategies often fall short in communicating the complexity of decision-making and its practical implications, resulting in a disconnect between academic theory and real-world practice. To address this gap, the project offers an innovative platform that leverages storytelling through interactive comics and a creative tool called the comic automaton, available in both English and German. The platform promotes a “learning by doing” philosophy by combining engaging narratives with hands-on digital tools. It covers key topics in cattle, sheep, and beef production, structured into clear subtopics that guide students through their learning journey. These interactive comics are illustrated in a distinctive comic style that adds visual engagement and contextual depth. Realistic characters—such as farmers, veterinarians, and animals—are featured throughout, making the learning experience more relatable and grounded in real-world agricultural settings. At the heart of the platform is the comic automaton, which enables students to create their own comics using a rich library of characters and farm-related elements. This encourages active learning by allowing users to reflect on various scenarios, express empathy, and engage with complex concepts from different viewpoints. Student participation has been central to the platform’s ongoing development, with feedback from multiple testing stages shaping its usability and content. Tierschutz-erLeben represents a fresh and impactful educational approach that connects theoretical instruction with practical, experience-based learning in agriculture.
