Remote operation is considered a feasible solution to realize automated driving by covering those edge-cases. Virtual reality (VR) can simulate complex and rare driving environments, providing a controlled yet immersive experience for remote operators. In this preliminary study, cases difficult to reproduce in the real world were created using VR, and remote operator’s performance was evaluated while different viewpoints were provided for supporting automated vehicles remotely. The results revealed that participants performed better when with a traditional driver’s view than with a bird’s view. VR based training and evaluation is considered a promising approach to optimize remote operation systems.

摘要

Remote operation is considered a feasible solution to realize automated driving by covering those edge-cases. Virtual reality (VR) can simulate complex and rare driving environments, providing a controlled yet immersive experience for remote operators. In this preliminary study, cases difficult to reproduce in the real world were created using VR, and remote operator’s performance was evaluated while different viewpoints were provided for supporting automated vehicles remotely. The results revealed that participants performed better when with a traditional driver’s view than with a bird’s view. VR based training and evaluation is considered a promising approach to optimize remote operation systems.
