Lower extremity traumatic amputations are not infrequent injuries in developed countries, affecting a relatively young population group and commonly associated with motor-vehicle accidents. Optimal treatment of these injuries has not been established, although the literature tends to support primary revision amputation and prosthesis. This apparently straightforward approach has distinct complications, including painful neuromas, irritation, and ulceration of the stump skin, increased long-term costs, and obvious impairment of the patient’s body self-image.

摘要

Lower extremity traumatic amputations are not infrequent injuries in developed countries, affecting a relatively young population group and commonly associated with motor-vehicle accidents. Optimal treatment of these injuries has not been established, although the literature tends to support primary revision amputation and prosthesis. This apparently straightforward approach has distinct complications, including painful neuromas, irritation, and ulceration of the stump skin, increased long-term costs, and obvious impairment of the patient’s body self-image.
