Working donkeys and mules represent an indispensable yet underappreciated labor force, integral to the functioning of many societies, particularly in the developing world. These animals perform critical tasks under conditions that would challenge both human and other animal laborers, carrying heavy loads and navigating arduous terrain. Despite their contributions, their role in sustaining human livelihoods remains largely invisible, absent from mainstream discourse, media coverage, and global development priorities. Veterinary care is limited to nonexistence, similar to health care for the people working with these animals. When care is many challenges from the efficacy of medications are available, legislation preventing certain medications from entering the country to training professionals to treat many of the same diseases caused by poor body condition scores and ill-fitting harness. This chapter will explore challenges and solutions for working abroad as a veterinarian with limited supplies, many bureaucratic, cultural practices and challenges.
