Companion Donkeys and Mules
摘要
Donkeys (Equus asinus) and mules (Equus mulus) have traditionally been valued for their strength, endurance, and service in agricultural and transport systems, but they are increasingly recognized for their potential as companion animals. Their calm temperament, cognitive abilities, resilience, and adaptability make them suitable partners for families, therapy programs, and sustainable animal ownership. This manuscript explores the diverse roles of donkeys and mules as pets, interspecies companions, therapeutic agents, protectors in livestock systems, cultural and spiritual symbols, and even participants in warfare and politics. It also addresses welfare, training, health management, and ethical considerations in domestic settings. By integrating historical, scientific, and practical perspectives, the work highlights the unique capacities of donkeys and mules to contribute to human well-being across contexts, while emphasizing the responsibilities and challenges of their care.
