Finding Nemo: A Serious Game to Raise Children’s Awareness of Information Pollution
摘要
The emergence of digital platforms has provided unprecedented access to online content. A click, swipe, or scroll can lead to a continuous flow of news, articles, and social media posts competing for users’ attention. However, within this ocean of content lies a hidden risk: the rapid (un)intentional contamination of information, also known as Information Pollution. Although much research has been conducted to study this problem among different age groups, there is limited understanding of how children, who have unique search needs and behaviours, interact with the overwhelming amount of online information. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the factors that influence children’s perception of online content when they are inundated with irrelevant and redundant information. The contribution of this study is the development of a system to raise children’s awareness of information overload through play. Inspired by the findings and gaps identified from the literature on the interaction between young generations and new Information Access Systems, this study aims to design and develop a digital game to illustrate the concept of Information Pollution to children aged between 9 and 11, using the metaphor of Ocean Noise Pollution. The game aims to provide valuable insights into how children perceive reliable information while at the same time making them aware of misleading content, ultimately trying to lay the groundwork for mitigating the effects of this phenomenon among the young generation.
