Sustainable Development is the focus of discussion in many aspects of society. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) became effective in 2016, consisting of 17 goals to be achieved by 2030. This chapter explores hiring practices of Japanese private sector companies before and after the implementation of SDGs (2016 and 2021), to investigate the changes to the new global initiative. The hiring practices intersect with Sustainable Development Goal 8, aiming for inclusive economic growth and employment. However, in Japanese society gender disparities are also common in hiring process, with women often relegated to part-time roles due to familial responsibilities, also highlighting challenges in achieving SDG 5 on gender equality. Despite efforts, Japan faces significant challenges in meeting both SDGs. This chapter examines the hiring trends of young graduates in 2016 and 2022 to assess Japanese private sector hiring number related to gender and age, shedding light on progress towards these global goals of equal opportunities of employment. The results from the Japanese private companies investigated in this study shows that there is still a pattern of high percentage of males in the general and young workforce. The changes in percentage of young females hired from 2016 to 2022 were small when comparing both years (3.4%), which demonstrates low progress even after the implementation of the SDGs. The reasons could be pointed as a reflection of the corporate culture for hiring employees and a perception of women as the main carrier of household tasks.
