Defining the Scope and Framework of STEM4S for Design Education: Case Analysis of Design Course Topic with Single-Use Food Packaging Waste
摘要
Design education is increasingly essential in fostering sustainability by promoting critical thinking and problem-solving through design thinking and hands-on learning. STEM education for sustainability (STEM4S) extends traditional STEM education by addressing global challenges such as climate change and the SDGs through multidisciplinary approaches. This study investigates the integration of STEM4S into design education in Taiwan, focusing on single-use food packaging waste at National Taiwan Normal University. Focusing on the Asia-Pacific region, this research addresses the unique sustainability challenges of a rapidly developing area, emphasizing the role of education in driving innovative solutions. The study employs qualitative analysis of student design projects and quantitative analysis of pre- and post-course questionnaires to evaluate the effectiveness of STEM4S in cultivating sustainability competencies. The findings demonstrate how integrating STEM4S enhances students’ ability to tackle real-world challenges, contributing to sustainable development and fostering critical thinking within the region.
