Although the implementation of sustainable development is a global movement in higher education institutions, it is rare to see the involvement of colleges located in rural areas. Nevertheless, the Antonio Meneghetti Faculdade is a higher education institution founded in 2007 in the rural area of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in Brazil, and has always been aligned with international movements regarding the teaching of sustainable development in its higher education courses. Among the five educational pillars of this institution, there are the pillars of internationalization and work, fostering students’ practices in the work market. In alignment with these two pillars, this college constitutes an interesting case study. For example, it has taken part in the UNESCO Decade of Education for Sustainable Development; since 2011, it has been part of the PRME movement of the UN and of the UN Academic Impact movement; in 2018, the Antonio Meneghetti Foundation, the institution that supports and keeps the college, acquired special consultative status with the ECOSOC of the UN. This background has enabled students from this institution to be involved with the main discussions regarding sustainability promoted around the world. Because of this, the college and the Antonio Meneghetti Foundation promote 28 projects focused on the Sustainable Development Goals, which have students’ leadership and benefit more than 4 thousand people from poor economic backgrounds who live in cities nearby the campus, free of charge. Also, a project from 2017 will be detailed here, in which students created SDG projects in the classroom as part of a special project. This paper may be useful to anyone interested in the different levels of emphasis given to sustainable development at higher education institutions in rural areas.
