The concluding chapter revisits the central questions posed at the beginning of the volume. Reflecting on the lessons learned from discussions of historical and contemporary crises, it argues for the continued relevance of political economy in understanding crisis today. The authors develop a structural theory of crisis grounded in historical materialism, emphasising the interdependence of accumulation and legitimation, and the central role of mass politics in both shaping and resolving capitalist crisis. Tracing the origins of the current period to the resolution of the 1970s crisis and the subsequent erosion of mass politics, the chapter shows how today’s apparent interlocking crises are rooted in the absence of any lasting social compact after 2008. The chapter evaluates evolving dynamics of crisis in the context of impending climate catastrophe and contends that rebuilding mass politics is essential for any viable solution to capitalism’s ongoing crisis.

摘要
