A strict definition of “stage” and “multistage” in mechanical systems engineering is formulated to avoid ambiguity with other disciplines. Mechanical and hydro-mechanical systems could in cases be designed in multiple stages. This is done either by necessity or for achieving higher power density as well as higher dynamibility, when compared to other systems of the same overall functional requirement, among other objectives.
