‘I Wanted to Create Reality Instead of Documenting It’. Interview with Iwona Harris
摘要
In this chapter, Iwona Harris brings to the fore the importance of documentary filmmaking as a tool for civic awareness, democratic resilience, and resistance. Her documentary Judges Under Pressure, co-produced with Kacper Lisowski, captures the resistance of independent judges and civil society against government efforts to undermine judicial independence. Initially aiming to create children’s films, Harris shifted her focus to political documentary after witnessing first-hand the erosion of the rule of law in her country. Gaining access to judges and opposition voices, the documentary portrays them not as distant officials, but as engaged citizens defending democracy. Despite state censorship, political intimidation, and international diplomatic pushback, including attempts to block screenings abroad, the film gained widespread recognition, particularly outside Poland. Harris reflects on media capture, propaganda, EU scepticism in rural areas, and the crucial role of education and civic mobilisation. She sees the European Union as a necessary guarantor of values like human rights and judicial independence and calls for deeper integration based on shared principles, not just financial gain.
