While Captain SquireSquire, Matthew” and his contingent were busy in Hampton and on the Peninsula, on October 12 Loyalist forces and British Regulars landed near Norfolk and marched approximately one and half miles into the hinterland in search of Patriot resistance. While on patrol, the detachment of seventy or eighty men, possibly assisted by runaway slaves, destroyed or captured nineteen pieces of cannon and artillery from Patriot soldiers. Over the course of the next week, DunmoreDunmore repeated the excursion with similar coastal landings and interior forays around Norfolk in search of Patriot arms. On October 19, they destroyed and captured sixteen more field pieces, and on October 20 they captured six more.
