Eugène Charles Apert (1868–1940) is well known for describing acrocephalosyndactyly, or Apert syndrome. However, the biography of this pediatrician at Paris hospitals is largely unknown. Apert came from a family of merchants based in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. A brilliant medical student, he interned at Paris hospitals and then served as chef de clinique for Professor Georges Dieulafoy. Appointed hospital doctor, he was in charge of a pediatric department at the Hôpital des Enfants Malades. In addition to his many pediatric works, Apert was a pioneer of medical genetics, helping to make the laws of genetic transmission widely known. He was also a moderate eugenicist who sought to educate rather than coerce.
