The Road to Disinformation Nation: Tyranny of Populism, Power, and the Battle to Reclaim Truth in a Post-Truth World
摘要
In an era defined by digital saturation and ideological fragmentation, truth itself has become a contested terrain. This chapter interrogates the mechanisms by which populist movements weaponize disinformation, leveraging emotional resonance and algorithmic reach to consolidate power and destabilize democratic norms. The rise of post-truth politics has turned the information ecosystem into a battleground—where facts compete with fiction, and narratives are engineered to provoke allegiance over understanding. Drawing from contemporary examples and critical theory, this chapter explores how populist actors disrupt traditional epistemic paradigms, rejecting established sources of authority and reframing expertise as elitism. Through tactics such as coordinated propaganda, strategic trolling, meme culture, and selective outrage, political leaders reshape public perception and reorient civic discourse around grievance and identity. This manipulation is not merely communicative—it is structural, reinforcing existing hierarchies while marginalizing diverse voices. Social media platforms, built on engagement-based algorithms, serve as fertile ground for echo chambers that deepen polarization and entrench cognitive bias. The result is an environment where “alternative facts” flourish, journalism fights for legitimacy, and citizens struggle to discern reality from rhetoric. Power operates not only through content, but through its circulation, reach, and emotional charge—creating an architecture of influence that is as opaque as it is potent. Yet, within this storm of distortion, countercurrents persist. This chapter maps promising interventions—from media literacy education and digital transparency reforms to inclusive civic engagement and localized truth-building efforts. It argues that reclaiming truth requires more than correcting falsehoods; it demands reconstructing trust, reimagining inclusion, and empowering citizens to participate meaningfully in the democratic project. In sum, this chapter positions disinformation as both a symptom and a strategy of populist power, and proposes a multidimensional approach to restoring integrity in public discourse. The battle for truth is not merely semantic—it is paradigmatic, political, and profoundly cultural. And in fighting to reclaim it, we affirm not just fact—but the future of informed and inclusive democratic life.
