Political conservatismpolitical conservatism in Afghanistan redirected the revolutionary pattern of regime change toward a model of gradual, reform-oriented political developmentdevelopment. During the four decades of monarchical rule (1933–1973), the Afghan state became a site of tension between the preservation of centralized royal authorityauthority and the incremental movement toward a more participatory and institutionalized political orderpolitical order.
