The weakening of the Western Roman Empire generally marks the beginning of the Early Middle Ages, with a decline in historical records and advancements. Known as ‘The Dark Ages’ from the fifth to tenth centuries A.D., this period saw a return to bartering as a form of generalised currency when money became scarce with the departure of the Roman legions. Those who could left with the legions for protection, heading to the Roman frontier (Kaufmann and Kaufmann 2001). During this time, physicians returned to their home countries, taking with them their medical experience and skills (Wilkinson 2001).
