The emotional and social implications of visible scars, especially those that are large and disfiguring, can contribute to reduced self-esteem and social withdrawal. As a result, effective management of keloids and hypertrophic scars remains a clinical challenge. Understanding the mechanisms behind their development has been a focus of research, with recent advancements providing new insights into the molecular and cellular processes that contribute to excessive scar formation.
