Understanding the Kaleidoscopic Nature of Interactive Digital Narratives Through Repeat Experience
摘要
An essential feature of interactive digital narratives (IDNs) is their kaleidoscopic nature – the idea that players can make choices, either explicitly or implicitly, that enable them to experience significantly different variations of or perspectives on a story. This is one reason why IDNs are seen as an important medium for understanding the complexities of the modern world. This paper argues that, to understand and take advantage of the kaleidoscopic nature of IDNs, it is essential that we explore and make sense of repeat experience of IDNs, as it is only through experiencing an IDN multiple times that the fundamental properties of the medium can be fully appreciated. The paper draws together previous work on repeat experience of IDNs, recontextualizing that work in the context of the “System, Process, Product” (SPP) model of IDN to propose an updated, synthesized model of replay, and highlighting key questions for future research.
