Enhancement of Risk Control Measures to Mitigate Aircraft Maintenance Errors in Critical Tasks

Aviation safety is critical to ensuring the well-being of passengers, crew, and other stakeholders. Aircraft maintenance plays a key role in preventing accidents and operational failures. Proper maintenance ensures the reliability and performance of aircraft systems, helping to minimize risks and maintain high safety standards in an increasingly complex and regulated industry. While most errors during maintenance activities are minor, a small percentage significantly threaten aviation safety. Maintenance mistakes can be hard to detect and may remain unnoticed, jeopardizing aircraft safety over time. Studies show that maintenance errors account for 12–15% of commercial aviation accidents. The research aims to identify common causes of aircraft maintenance errors, assess the effectiveness of current risk controls, review organizational factors impacting these controls, explore best practices for enhancing risk management, and develop guidelines to improve the implementation of risk control measures for critical maintenance tasks. The research method used has been qualitative analysis of interviews, using NVIVO software for the analysis. The research found that procedure deviation, including incomplete tasks and incorrect part usage, accounted for 85% of maintenance errors. Key contributing factors include complacency (33%) and night shifts (21%). Although 77% of participants viewed risk controls as effective, gaps persist in areas like technology application, task feedback, and engineer shortages.
